How do I know if my dog is a PPP?
Royal Decree 287/2002 classes eight breeds and their crosses as Potentially Dangerous Dogs (PPP): Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu and Akita Inu. On top of that, each region can add requirements based on build (over 20 kg, a prominent jaw, heavy musculature). In our legal centre we spell it out for the region you live in.
Why won't just any muzzle do for my Pitbull or my Rottweiler?
PPP breeds have a wider jaw and bite harder. An ordinary nylon muzzle breaks within a few weeks and, on top of that, clamps the snout so tightly the dog can't pant. That's why we always point you towards basket muzzles in biothane or reinforced silicone: they let the dog pant, drink and take treats, and they're the ones asked for at shows and in K9 work.
How do I know what size to order?
Measure around the snout, the neck and the chest. Put those measurements and the breed into our size finder and in under a minute it tells you which muzzle and which size to order. If you're torn between two, order the larger one; returns are free for 30 days.
Do I need a licence to keep a PPP dog in Spain?
Yes. The licence is issued by your town hall, and to get it you have to be of legal age, have no criminal record, provide a certificate of physical and psychological fitness, take out third-party liability insurance of at least €120,000 and register the animal. It is renewed every 5 years, although some regions shift that period slightly.
Which supplements suit a PPP dog?
Muscular breeds wear their joints down faster, Rottweilers, German Shepherds and Mastiffs above all. From the age of 3 you can start a preventive joint supplement (glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM). If your dog is also out a lot or training hard, omega 3-6-9 will do their coat good and works as an anti-inflammatory. If your order comes to more than €100, we throw in a consultation with our vets so they can confirm it for you.
